Caption: A molecular model of progesterone, a steroid hormone released during the menstrual cycle and pregnancy, produced in the ovaries, adrenal glands and placenta. After ovulation, progesterone levels rise and prepare the uterus for implantation. If pregnancy does not occur, progesterone levels drop, leading to menstruation. However during pregnancy, the placenta will produce and maintain higher progesterone levels. Atoms are colored dark gray (carbon), light gray (hydrogen) and red (oxygen).
