Caption: Marvels of the East. Scene from the 11th-century manuscript 'Marvels of the East'. Also called 'Wonders of the East', it was produced in Anglo-Saxon Britain and written in Old English. A 'liber monstrorum' (book of marvels), it detailed monsters and mythical creatures found in eastern regions (Babylon, Persia, Egypt and India). The tales are thought to be Roman or Greek in origin.
