Caption: Star trails over La Palma observatory. Time-exposure image of stars passing around the north celestial pole over the telescope array of the Roque de los Muchachos Observatory, La Palma, Canary Islands. Star trails are formed by the apparent motion of the stars in the sky as the Earth rotates on its axis. This observatory is situated 2,600 metres above sea level and is home to some of the world's leading research telescopes. The trail of the International Space Station (ISS) can be seen above the horizon at left, and light from the larger island of Tenerife can be seen on the horizon at right.
