Caption: Zanzibar slave trade. 19th-century artwork of slave traders with slaves in Zanzibar, an island off the coast of eastern Africa. In the 19th century, Zanzibar was East Africa's main slave-trading port. Slaves captured in mainland Africa were brought there and sold by Arab merchants from Oman. At its peak, tens of thousands of slaves were traded annually, though thousands died before ever reaching the slave markets. Slavery was not abolished in Zanzibar until 1897. This engraving dates from circa 1888.
