Caption: Women smoking secretly, historical artwork. Smoking was popularised in Europe in the 1580s and 1590s when tobacco was brought back from the Americas by Sir Walter Raleigh. Since then, smoking has been part-legalised, banned and restricted with varying levels of success. This wood engraving dates from circa 1897.
