Caption: Marienplatz square. Historical artwork of a scene in the Marienplatz (St Mary's Square), Munich, Bavaria, in what is now Germany, at the end of the 15th century. This area has been the city's main square since 1158. At centre are two women being punished using a shrew's fiddle, a variant of the pillory. It was used to punish women that had quarrelled, locking them together face-to-face. This wood engraving dates from circa 1897.
