Caption: Herbal liqueur production. 19th-century artwork of Chartreuse herbal liqueur being produced by the Carthusian monks of the Grande Chartreuse monastery, near Grenoble, France. At top they are gathering the herbs to be used to flavour distilled alcohol (bottom). This liqueur has been made since 1737 according a secret recipe given to the monks in 1605. The liqueur is flavoured with 130 different herbs. This wood engraving dates from circa 1888.
