Caption: Nicholson sphygmomanometer in its case, dating from 1910, America. The sphygmomanometer was originally invented by Samuel Siegfried Karl Ritter von Basch in 1881 and was used to measure blood pressure. In this example, the reading would be taken from the level of mercury in a vertical glass tube.
