Caption: Sir Richard Owen, museum statue. British anatomist and palaeontologist Richard Owen (1804-1892) was the founder and first director of the Natural History Museum, London, UK. Owen became an expert in comparative anatomy and did extensive research on fossils and dinosaurs. He was initially bitterly opposed to Darwin's theory of evolution through natural selection, but subsequently changed his views as Darwin's ideas became widely accepted. Owen was knighted in 1884. This marble bust, by Michael Wagmuller (1839-1881), dates from 1871. Original held at the Natural History Museum.
