Caption: Charles Hazelius Sternberg (1850-1943), US fossil collector and amateur palaeontologist. Sternberg and later his sons were renowned fossil collectors, with Sternberg working for Edward Drinker Cope in the early years of the Bone Wars. The fossils collected by Sternberg from the western USA and Canada are displayed in museums worldwide. Sternberg was deeply religious, and in old age visited the American Museum of Natural History to view his finds. After one such visit, he said: 'My own body will crumble in dust, my soul return to the God who gave it, but the works of His hands, those animals of other days, will give joy and pleasure to generations yet unborn.'.
