Caption: Dental hygiene set with nine steel tools and an ivory handle. These are shown in a silk-lined morocco case. This set is French and dates from around 1820. The nineteenth century was a period of rapid progression in the field of dentistry and dental hygiene; it saw the first publication of the British Dental Journal (1843) and the opening of the first dental schools in Britain (1859).
