Green alga. Coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of a section through the single celled green alga Chlamydomonas asymmetrica. The micrograph shows the arrangement of chloroplasts (brown and yellow) around the circumference of the cell. Chloroplasts are the sites of photosynthesis, the process that synthesises carbohydrates from carbon dioxide and water using sunlight. The pigment responsible for photosynthesis, chlorophyll, is found on stacks of parallel thylakoids (membranes, brown) called grana. Sugar may be stored in the chloroplast as starch (yellow). Algal chloroplasts often contain a body called a pyrenoid (red). Its function is unknown. Magnification: x7,400 when printed at 10 centimetres wide.
