Caption: Vaginal douche by Dr. Eguisier. Douches such as this one, although unreliable, were one of the most common methods of contraception in this era. The cylindrical metal supply vessel has a pump mechanism which controlled the passage of rinsing fluid to the red hose. This apparatus was originally designed by Parisian doctor, Maurice Eguisier (1813-1851). This example is French and dates from around 1900.
