Caption: Satirical buttons depicting King Louis XIV during and after taking an enema. These are made from plated brass and date from around 1700, France. Enemas were at the height of popularity in aristocratic circles in Paris during the early reign of King Louis XIV (1638-1715). 'The King of Enemas' was believed to have had up to four enemas a day during his reign and was even known to receive visitors whilst the procedure was administered. Enemas were believed to be beneficial to health and complexion.
