Caption: Influenza virus. Illustration of an influenza (flu) virus particle (virion). The virus consists of an RNA (ribonucleic acid) core (black), surrounded by a nucleocapsid (bright pink) and a lipid envelope (pink and black). In the envelope are two types of protein spike, haemagglutinin (H) and neuraminidase (N). They determine the strain of virus and are used for recognising and binding to the host cell.
