Caption: Stomach wall. Illustration of a section through the wall of the stomach. The interior (lumen) of the stomach is at top. The stomach surface is lined with glandular mucosa that has numerous invaginations, called gastric pits, where the gastric glands (red) open to the lumen. The gastric glands secrete enzymes and acid to digest the food. The surface epithelial cells produce an alkaline mucous that protects the surface of the stomach from its acid contents. At bottom are layers of smooth muscle.
