Caption: Double slit experiment, computer artwork. Laser beams (green) are shone at a plate (centre) containing two slits. The light that passes through is observed on a screen (right) behind the plate. This experiment shows that light exhibits the characteristics of both a wave and a particle, a phenomenon known as wave-particle duality. The light only travels through one slit, as would be expected of a particle, but as it passes through light from the two slits interfere, as would be expected of a wave.
