Shown here is a molecule of water (top centre), which is composed of two hydrogen atoms (dark blue) and an oxygen atom (light blue). Each atom is composed of electrons (orange, detail shown at top right) orbiting a central nucleus (detail at right). Each nucleus is composed of protons (yellow) and neutrons (purple), which are themselves composed of three quarks. Protons (detail at centre) are composed of two up quarks(blue) and one down quark (orange). Neutrons (detail at centre right) are composed of two down quarks and one up quark. At bottom centre is a superstring, which string theory states are the fundamental constituents of reality.
