Caption: Aerial photograph of the Fermi National Accelerat- or Laboratory (Fermilab) near Chicago, Illinois. At centre is the circular service road which marks the location of the 2km diameter underground ring of the Tevatron accelerator. Protons are acceler- ated in the Tevatron up to energies of 1000 GeV (1 TeV). They are then deflected in an underground "switchyard" to form a number of separate beams that service three main experimental areas. Since 1986, the Tevatron has also operated as a collider, smashing protons & antiprotons together. Fermilab's "High-Rise" administration building can be seen at centre left.
