Caption: The Local Bubble. Map of a small area of our Milky Way galaxy, centred on the Sun. The Sun's neighbourhood is surrounded by a loop of gas (yellow) with a diameter of about 500 light years. It was probably formed by the blast wave of a supernova explosion or by the combined stellar winds of many young stars. Red giant stars are marked by pink circles, blue giants by pale blue circles. The Local Bubble is surrounded by other Loops; Loop I is compressing the Local Bubble, pushing streamers of gas (yellow upper centre), including the Local Fluff, towards the Sun. The Henbest/Baum galaxy map is based on the location of 1500 bright stars, nebulae and other objects.
