Caption: Magnet testing equipment at the magnet testing facility at CERN, the European particle physics laboratory. CERN straddles the Swiss-French border near Geneva. This equipment is part of the SM-18 facility, used to test superconducting magnets and instruments at very low temperatures (down to 1.9 Kelvin) and high currents (up to 20 kiloamperes). The magnets are used in the particle accelerators such as the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). The LHC is a 27-kilometre-long underground ring used to accelerate beams of protons to high energies and study the particles produced when the beams collide. Photographed in August 2012.
