Caption: Antiproton Decelerator (AD) instruments. The AD is used to decelerate antiprotons for use in experiments at CERN, the European particle physics laboratory. CERN straddles the Swiss-French border near Geneva. Anti-particles are produced by particle accelerators, in this case from a beam of protons fired into a block of metal. The AD uses magnets and electric fields to slow the resulting antiprotons down and channel them into experimental areas. Four experiments at CERN are studying antimatter: AEGIS, ALPHA, ASACUSA and ATRAP. Photographed in August 2012.
