Caption: Cosmodrome. Construction work under way at the site of the Vostochny Space Centre in the Amur Region of eastern Russia. This site is being built to reduce Russia's dependency on the Baikonur Cosmodrome which, since the collapse of the Soviet Union, is in Kazakhstan. This is partly for security reasons and partly to reduce the rent costs of Baikonur which are over USD 115 million per year. The new cosmodrome will have seven launch pads, will support manned flights and cargo supply to space stations and is expected to be completed buy 2018. Photographed in 2012.
