Caption: Bill Richmond (1763-1829). Pugilist/Boxer. Portrait. The son of former slaves, Richmond became a respected boxer. He fought a famous match against the British champion Tom Cribb in 1805. After retirement he established a boxing academy in London. Became a popular publican and respected member of the Fancy. Image taken from Boxiana; or Sketches of ancient and modern pugilism; from the days of the reowned Broughton and Slack, to the heroes of the present milling aera! By One of the Fancy i.e. Pierce Egan. With plates. Originally published in G. Smeeton: London, 1812.
