Caption: Tevatron. The tunnel of the Main Accelerator, the Tevatron, at the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory (Fermilab) near Chicago in Illinois, USA. The main accelerator consists of two rings of magnets. The upper ring (coloured red and blue) contains conventional magnets. These accelerate protons to an energy of 150 GigaElectron Volts (GeV). They are then injected into the lower ring (coloured yellow and red) containing nitrogen-cooled superconducting magnets which accelerate the protons to 1000 Gev. The accelerator ring has a diameter of 2km and is used to smash accelerated protons & antiprotons together.
