Caption: Portrait of Van-Ta-Zhin, a military Mandarin. An officer appointed to attend the British Embassy. He wears a cap with a peacock feather. He wears a blue cotton jacket and a silk veSt From his girdle hangs his handkerchief, knife, chopsticks and purses for tobacco. He has a bow and quiver of arrows. His boots are of satin, with thick soles of paper: 'these are always worn by the mandarins and superior Chinese'. Image taken from The Costume of China.
