Caption: Ferdinand duc d'Orleans, (1810-1842), was the eldest son and heir of King Louis-Philippe. He was a successful military leader, and popular with the public because of his liberal political vews. He was killed after being thrown from a light carriage, ending the hopes of the Orleans dynasty after the abdication of Louis-Philippe and the establishment of the short-lived Second Republic of 1848. Image taken from Les Rois contemporains. Biographies des souverains de lEurope par MM. Jules Janin, Andre Van Hasselt, Auguste Orts, Theodore Juste, Emma de Villers, Van Limburg, le Capitaine de Bormans, Eugene Gaussoin, Eugene Gens, Ferdinand Carron, etc, etc. With portraits.. Originally published in Bruxelles, 1849.
