Caption: Pitch-making. 1870 engraving of pitchers boiling pitch from tree resin in a wood in Vogtland. Pitch is the name for any number of viscoelastic solid polymers. It was traditionally sourced from resin (as here) and used to help caulk the seams of wooden sailing vessels and to waterproof wooden containers.
