Caption: Manby Mortar shipwreck rescue. 1869 engraving of survivors of a shipwreck being rescued with a Manby Mortar rocket apparatus. The Manby Mortar fired a shot with a line attached from the shore to the wrecked ship. It was invented by Captain George William Manby, who also invented the portable fire extinguisher.
