Tongue. Light micrograph of a section through healthy tongue tissue. The surface of the tongue (across top) consists of stratified squamous epithelium (dark pink) with a rough keratinised surface. Below this are interlacing bundles of muscles, between which are mucous glands (dark purple). The projections on the surface of the tongue are papillae, which house the taste buds. Magnification: x110 when printed at 10 centimetres wide.
