Caption: New Zealand war canoe, Whole drawing A double canoe under sail; the crew bidding defiance to the ships company. Some are performing the haka or war dance. A chief stands in the stern brandishing a 'mere', a Maori war weapon; another amidships holds a 'taiaha', a long handled staff or club. The confrontation was described in Joseph Bank's journal on 2 November 1769 Image taken from A Collection of Drawings made in the Countries visited by Captain Cook in his First Voyage, 1768-1771.
