Caption: Mothballs. Mothballs contain chemicals that repel or kill insects that feed on clothing. Older formulations used the organic compound naphthalene. Exposure to large amounts of naphthalene can lead to health problems due to the destruction of red blood cells. Current mothballs are made from 1,4-dichlorobenzene, which is classified as a carcinogen.
