Caption: Julia Boike (born 1967), German hydrologist. Boike studied at the universities of Bonn and Freiburg and the Wilfrid Laurier Univerisity in Ontario, Canada. She received her doctorate in 1997 from the Institute for Geosciences at the University of Potsdam. She has since worked in Potsdam at the Alfred Wegener Insitute at the Helmholtz Center for Polar and Marine Research. Her research interests include soil thermal dynamics, hydrologic and geochemical processes, climate science, and water balance measuring and modelling. Projects include the study of the role of degrading permafrost and carbon turnover in the coastal, shelf and deep-sea environment.
