Caption: Superconducting magnet. Technician assisting in the manufacture of a superconducting magnet for installation in the Main Injector particle accelerator at Fermilab (Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory) near Chicago, USA. Superconductors are materials which have no electrical resistance when cooled below a certain temperature. The use of superconductors in a magnets allows the creation of larger magnetic fields since no electrical power is lost in the wire. This enables beams of protons & antiprotons in the Main Injector to be accelerated to close to the speed of light for use in particle physics research.
