Caption: The Struggle for a Bengal Butcher and an Imp-Pie, Hastings is shown at the centre of a tug-of-war, poised in the act of cutting a pie. The imps dancing on its surface refer to the first Chief Justice of Bengal, Sir Elijah Impey, Hastings' ally and the judge responsible for sentencing his enemy Nanda Kumar to death. To the right stand the Devil and Hastings' supporter Thurlow, whose satanic associations are signalled by the transformation of his left foot into a cloven hoof. To the left are gathered the managers of the impeachment, Burke, Fox, Sheridan and William Windham. Published : 1788
