Caption: Alethopteris seed fern fossil. Close-up of a slab of coal shale containing a fossilised specimen of an Alethopteris seed fern. It dates from around 300 million years ago, during the Westphalian stage of the Carboniferous. It is from the Lens coalfield in the Pas-de-Calais region of France. The entire specimen (see C018/9379) measures 24 by 30 centimetres. It is part of the Barrois collection at the Museum of Geology in Lille, France.
