Caption: Pecopteris fern fossil. Slab of coal shale containing a fossilised specimen of the fern Pecopteris miltani. This specimen dates from around 300 million years ago, during the Westphalian stage of the Carboniferous. It is from the Aniche coalfield of northern France, and measures 20 by 29 centimetres. It is part of the Barrois collection at the Museum of Geology in Lille, France.
