ER is a membranous cell organelle responsible for functions such as protein production, transportation and storage. The membranes enclose an internal space or compartment within the cell known as the ER lumen. Rough ER has ribosomes attached, while smooth ER, a site of lipid synthesis, lacks ribosomes.
