The artwork was drawn for that issue's lead story 'Food for the fifth plate', about the role of chemistry and DuPont research in agriculture and crop science. Founded in 1913, this magazine featured the products and activities of the DuPont Company. By the 1930s DuPont (founded in the USA in 1802) had become one of the world's largest chemical companies.
