Caption: Iron works. These buildings and blast furnaces are part of the Crane Iron Works, Catasauqua, Pennsylvania, USA. Dating from the period 1890-1920, this photograph is from the Albert T. Keller collection of the American Iron and Steel Institute. The collection consists of historical photographs of blast furnaces used in the iron and steel industry. A blast furnace is where iron ore is heated to high temperatures in the presence of oxygen, with the carbon content controlled to produce types of steel (an alloy of iron and carbon).
