Caption: Polarised light micrograph of crystals of D- arabitol. This is a sugar alcohol derived from arabinose, a pentose sugar widely distributed in plants. Arabinose is normally a component of more complex polysaccharides such as the pectins contained in fruit and arabans found in the woody parts of plants. Magnification: x10 at 35 mm size.
