Caption: Graphene lattice, scanning tunnelling microscopy (STM) image. This three-dimensional representation shows an atomic-level resolution of the honeycomb architecture of graphene adsorbed on an alkyl-coated gold surface. The area shown here is 4.8 by 5.5 nanometres. The image was obtained using a scanning tunnelling microscope with the sample in a liquid (n-tetradecane) at room temperature. Atomic-scale defects and corrugations on the graphene lattice are detectable using this approach. Image published in 2013.
