Caption: Hafnium silicates. Supercomputer model of a hafnium silicate used in a study of new semiconductor computing microchips. This model contains more than 600 atoms and 5000 electrons. It is rendered as a ball-and-stick graphic, where the balls represent atoms (silicon in orange, hafnium in blue and oxygen in red) and the sticks represent the chemical bonds. These models are used by IBM researchers to calculate the electronic properties and behaviour of hafnium silicate. This research was carried out in 2007.
