Caption: Millipede computer memory research. View of a data storage method developed by IBM in a research project codenamed 'Millipede'. Announced in 2002 and demonstrated as a prototype in 2005, it uses scanning probe microscopy to achieve very high computer memory density. The use of nanotechnology and numerous small atomic force probes (array seen here) enabled IBM researchers to demonstrate a data storage density of one trillion bits per square inch. This is enough to store 25 million printed textbook pages on a surface the size of a postage stamp.
