Caption: Total lunar eclipse. Composite sequence of the Moon before, during and after a total lunar eclipse, seen over an eroded rock formation. This rock formation is in Bardenas Reales, a region of eroded clay, chalk and sandstone badlands in northern Spain. A total lunar eclipse occurs when the Earth moves between the Sun and the Moon. The orange colour of the Moon at totality (upper centre) is due to shorter wavelengths, such as blue light, being scattered more in Earth's atmosphere than longer wavelengths, such as red light. Photographed on 3-4 April 1996.
