Caption: Charles Vincent Walker (1812-1882), British electrical engineer. Walker worked on telegraphy (for South Eastern Railway) and pioneerd use of gutta-percha insulation, time signals, and submarine (underwater cable) telegraphy. He was elected Fellow of the Royal Society (1855) and Fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society (1858). He was President of the British Meteorological Society (1869) and President of the Society of Telegraph Engineers and Electricians (1876), later known as the Institution of Electrical Engineers.
