Caption: Rim Fire. Satellite image of plumes of smoke rising from the Sierra Nevada mountains, California, USA, on 26th August 2013. The central plume is from Rim Fire, a wildfire that burned from 17th August to 24th October 2013. It was the biggest recorded fire in the Sierra Nevada and California's third largest. The fire was started by an illegal camp fire and quickly spread to cover a large area (over 400 square kilometes in four days). By the time it was brought under control it had burned through over 1000 square kilometres. Image obtained by the MODIS (Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer) sensor on NASA's Aqua satellite.
