Caption: Homo erectus, artwork. Homo erectus is the most widespread and longest-surviving of all the fossil hominids. Its geographical spread included north and east Africa, Europe, Indonesia and China. It lived between 1 and 2 million years ago. It is considered a direct ancestor of modern humans. The main difference was in the size of the brain, which was significantly smaller than the brain of modern humans.
