Caption: Timelapse fluorescence microscopy footage of a cell dividing through mitosis. Mitosis is the process by which eukaryotic cells duplicate themselves, forming two identical cells. This cell has been transfected with a fluorescent label to the histone H2B, which is concentrated in the cell's chromosomes. At this stage, the chromosomes have already been duplicated, and they are seen to split into two pairs, which are pulled to opposite sides of the cell. This is followed by a separation of the cell membranes (cytokinesis), leading to the formation of two identical daughter cells. After separation, the chromosomes decondense back into their normal, non-mitotic form.
