Caption: Louise Ann Dolan (born 1950), US particle physicist. Dolan's research on mathematical and theoretical particle physics, cosmology and the early universe, helped found superstring theory. Her awards include the American Physical Society's Maria Goeppert-Mayer Award (1987): '[for] the theory of elementary particles, particularly for the identification and study of Kac-Moody algebras and their applications to Yang-Mills fields and relativistic string theory'. From 1979 to 1990, she worked at Rockefeller University. Since 1990, she has worked at the University of North Carolina, USA. Photographed at the 1983 Shelter Island Conference.
